Many years ago, I experienced homelessness firsthand. After my family lost our home, I found myself with nowhere to go and two children depending on me. Wanting to protect them from the uncertainty I was facing, I made the difficult decision to send them to stay with family while I entered a shelter alone. I spent hours calling shelter after shelter before finally finding one that could help.
That experience changed my life. Although I eventually regained stability through faith, prayer, and perseverance, I never forgot what it felt like to be scared, uncertain, and in need of support. I promised myself that if God brought me through that season, I would find a way to help others facing similar struggles.
Over the years, I volunteered, donated clothing and supplies, served meals, and looked for ways to give back to the Detroit community. But I felt called to do more. This mission is deeply personal to me because I know firsthand how life can change in an instant—and how one act of kindness can make all the difference.
In January 2026, that calling became clear. I began distributing backpacks filled with essential items and lunches directly to our unhoused neighbors. What started with a single outreach effort quickly became something much bigger.
Today, Keya's Kindness Collective exists to provide practical support, compassion, and hope to those experiencing homelessness. We believe every person deserves to be seen, valued, and treated with dignity. Together, we can remind people that they are not forgotten.
